Information
on Snow Country Ski Club
History
The
original club called Snow Country Club was formed
in 1951 when a group of people who had been meeting
one another in the snowfields each year since
the forties, decided to form a ski club.
In those
days there were so few skiers that people became
friends simply by being pioneers as such. There
were several families who mainly met up in the
school holidays and held races for their children
and stayed at the few accommodation places available,
whilst some stayed in their own caravans. Our
Club Badge was also designed at that time.
For
many years this was a club without a lodge and,
because there was some confusion with the Sydney
County Council ski club name, the name of our
club was changed to Snow Country Ski Club. S.C.S.C.
So the
club could avail itself of land to be allocated
in the Smiggins/Perisher area, it was decided
to form a registered Co-operative Society with
all shareholders having equal shares, these being
refunded on withdrawal from the club.
After
advertising for members, the first meeting of
the Co-Operative Society was held in July 1962
and a board of directors was elected. After acquiring
a lease for land at Smiggin Holes in 1962 the
Society decided to build a lodge to provide reasonably
priced, comfortable accommodation in the snowfields
for families - this is still the ethos of the
Club.
Today,
many of the original founders' families are actively
involved in the Club. In 2003 the Snow Country
Ski Club has some 350 members.
The
Lodges
Snow
Country Ski Club has two Lodges, the Ski Lodge
at Smiggin Holes and the Lake Lodge at Jindabyne.
Both vary differently in their set-up. The Smiggins'
Lodge is 'lodge' style, with share accommodation
(4 single bunks per room) and amenities. There
is a communal dining area where our resident managers
serve three meals daily. Guests are rostered to
set & clean up the dining table during their
stay. There are also lounge & bar (BYO) areas
for guests to relax after a good day skiing.
Our
Jindabyne Lodge has separate rooms consisting
of combined sleeping/lounge area (1 queen bed,
2 single bunk beds), en suite bathroom and small
kitchen. The rooms are not serviced during your
stay. There is a large communal kitchen and dining
area but guests must cook & clean-up for themselves.
Adjoining this area is also a bar (BYO) and games
room. The Smiggins' Lodge is open during the ski
season (June long weekend - October long weekend)
the Jindabyne Lodge is open all year round.

Junior
Ski Training Program
Snow
Country Ski Club runs a Junior Ski Training Program.
We aim to encourage our junior members to improve
their skills in skiing downhill, x-country &
snowboarding, at specified training periods. The
children go on to represent the Club at The Smiggins
Bowl and other race meetings during the season
including the NSW Interschool's competition.
The club subsidizes all of the training costs
for Junior Shareholders and part of the costs
for Shareholders' children. In doing this participants
must commit to the times set down for training
and races. Parents are asked to cover costs of
accommodation and equipment and provide support
to the Club in the organization of this program.
The
program is divided into two age groups: 6-9 and
10-17 with limited positions in each group. Junior
Shareholders are given priority. Shareholders'
children fill any remaining positions. To be eligible,
all children must fit the minimum ability criteria.
Application forms are sent before the start of
the season and are reviewed by the Board of Directors.
The
club encourages all our juniors to participate.
Through the program they gain personal confidence
through improved skiing ability and great sportsmanship
in the competition with other children their own
age and experience level.
